How do I apply for a Food Handlers Permit?
All persons currently working in or planning to work in a food handling establishment, regardless of their position, need a valid food handlers’ permit. This means persons such as:

A food handler’s permit is valid for one year from the date of issue, and must be renewed every year. Permit renewal follows the same procedure as the initial application. The renewal fee is $500.
Your food handlers permit is your passport for working in the food trade. It cannot be given to another person to use or to be renewed. It should be kept safe and available for inspection.
Your health department conducts training sessions throughout the year to facilitate you. Your friendly Public Health Inspector will provide you with more information if you so desire. Remember, to work in the food trade without a food handlers permit is a serious breach of the public health regulations.
Instruction: After you have completed the form, please take the form to the health department in your parish for processing.
I need a police record, how do I apply?
Persons who require a police record/certificate should visit any Inland Revenue Department Offices (Tax Office) and pay for the document to be processed. The receipt must be in the name of the applicant.
The fees are:
JA$3,000.00 – Regular Service- 21 working days
JA$6,000.00 – Express Service – 5 working days
JA$8,000.00 – Next Day Service (Temporarily suspended until further notice)
The receipt and the items listed below should be submitted to the Technical Services Division (Criminal Records Office), 56 Duke Street, Kingston. Applications may also be done at the Summit Police Station (St. James) and Area 2 Police Headquarters, Pompano Bay (St. Mary) on Monday to Thursday, 8:00 am to 4:00 pm and Friday – 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. Next day service is NOT available at these locations.
1. Taxpayer Registration Number (TRN)
2. Two passport-sized photographs (should not be certified or embossed).
3. One of the following three pieces of VALID identification Passport, National Identification Card, Driver’s License).
4. If the police record is for overseas/travelling purposes, a VALID passport must be presented.
A letter of authorization must be provided if the police record will be collected by someone other than the applicant. The bearer must have identification.
HOW TO OBTAIN A POLICE RECORD IF YOU ARE LIVING OVERSEAS.
1. Fingerprints (to be signed, stamped or sealed by the police or a reputable agency – the name of the person taking the fingerprints must be clearly stated on the document)
2. Two passport-sized photographs (should not be certified or embossed)
3. Front bio-data page of passport (must be certified)
4. Bank draft/ International money order made payable to The Commissioner of Police – Currencies US, Pound, Canadian, Jamaican
NB. Applicants from Great Britain are advised that only bank transfers are being accepted for the payment of police certificates/records. A receipt must be submitted displaying the transaction number along with the other required documents listed here. The bank account details are as follows:

What is the purpose of each payroll tax and contribution in Jamaica?
There are taxes and contributions that are mandatory for every Jamaican Resident gainfully employed. These are called statutory deductions.
Contributions
NIS – National Insurance Scheme
This is a contribution made by each employ every payroll cycle. This is a contribution under the National Insurance Scheme as a social security for pensioners and becomes beneficial or accessible upon retirement.
NHT
National Housing Trust contributions are deducted every payroll cycle, This is a benefit to the employee for house developments by obtaining mortgages and purchases. You are also entitled to refunds one you are contributing.
Taxes
Education Tax – This tax is used for expenditures related to educational development within the Jamaica
PAYE (Income Tax) – This tax is used to fund Public services.
I need to buy a house, how can I apply for an open market NHT loan?
There are some minimum requirements for being eligible to apply, some of which are listed below:
- You must be between the ages of 18 – 65 years old.
- You must be a contributor to NHT.
- You should have made at least 52 weekly contributions, 13 of which should have been submitted in the last 26 weeks.
- You should have identified a house and be able to afford to make the mortgage payments based on your earning power.

Do I qualify for NIS pension? How do I apply?
*NIS is a compulsory contributory funded social security scheme, which offers financial protection to the worker and his family against loss of income arising from injury on job, incapacity, retirement, and death of the insured.
Who qualifies?
All persons who are gainfully occupied in insurable employment are eligible to apply with the age limit of 18 to 70 years for males and 18 to 65 yrears for females.
The procedure to apply for a NIS card is as follows:
Apply In-Person
- To register for National Insurance Scheme (NIS) as an Individual, you should visit the NIS office under the Ministry of Labour and Social Security (MLSS). Please view the NIS contact details in the “Office Locations &Contacts”section below and the MLSS contact details via this link:Link
- Obtain the NIS Individual Registration form from any of the NIS offices or download the form from the MLSS website through this link:Link (Select “NIS Individual Registration” to download the form)
- Read and complete the registration form as instructed.
- Attach the required supporting documents to the application form as mentioned in the “Required Documents” section below
- Go to the NIS office in your parish and submit the complete application to the NIS official at the service desk
- The NIS official will verify your application if it meets the required standard and enter your details into their system for processing
- Then the application will be processed and you will be registered with the NIS
- After the registration process, you will be issued with your unique NIS registration number

- Married women must also submit the original or notarized copy of their marriage certificate if their proof of name is the birth certificate or if their married name is not recorded in their passport.
- If you are unable to apply by yourself, you can send a third party with an authorization letter to act on your behalf.

I need a bank account. What are the general requirements to open a personal account?
Every bank has its own unique requirements, however, there are a few standard one’s that are required. You must have the following:
- Copy of your TRN
- A minimum of one (1) valid Government ID (e.g. National ID, Driver’s license or Passport).
- Proof of address (e.g. utility bill). In the event that you have no business linked to your address, you may have a letter prepared by a Justice of the Peace, confirming your residence.
- A minimum opening deposit, which varies by bank.
- One (1) or Two (2) references (e.g. Justice of the Peace (JP), existing account (s) holder (s), lawyer or minister of religion).
- Proof of income or employment (Job letter).
I'm new to employment, how are salaries typically paid?
Before you can be gainfully employed, your employer will ask you for a copy of your NIS number and your TRN number. Please ensure you apply for these at the NIS office and Tax office respectively. These are needed to process your salaries to meet Taxation obligations.
Salaries are typically paid either on a monthly schedule (Twelve (12) payments per year) or a fortnightly schedule (Twenty-Six (26) payments per year).
Monthly Salaries
Typically, monthly salaries are paid on the 25th of every month.
Fortnightly Salaries
Fortnightly payments are twice a month. However, there are two (2) months out of the year that have three (3) fortnights within which you will receive three (3) fortnight payments.
